    How long does 3D scanning a mine take? The honest answer depends on the size and complexity of what is being scanned. Here is a practical guide to scan timelines based on Innosa Projects’ experience scanning mine sites across the North West Platinum Belt.

    Typical Scan Timelines by Scope.

    Single building or processing area (up to 2,000m²). One shift, 8 to 12 hours on site including setup, scanning, and quality verification.

    Conveyor system (single line, surface). Half to one shift, 4 to 8 hours depending on length and access complexity.

    Full processing plant (multiple buildings, pipe bridges, tank farm). Two to three days typically 16 to 24 hours of on-site scanning.

    Underground workings (haulage levels, shaft infrastructure). One to two shifts per level, depending on drive length and access.

    What happens after the scan?

    Generally there are 4 main steps:

    1. The actual 3D Scanning
    2. Scan registration, noise removal. This can be delivered as ‘raw’ pointcloud 

    Data, such as E57, .LAS, .PTS, 

    1. The point cloud can then be developed into usable Engineering, Structural and Architectural 3D models used for CAD packages such as Revit, AutoCad, etc
    2. In addition, 2D as-built drawings can also be developed with the desired level of detailing and supplied as DWG, .DXF and .DGN

    Can the timeline be compressed for Shutdown Deadlines?
