    How Non-Intrusive Scanning works.

    LIDAR 3D scanning works by emitting laser pulses and measuring the time they take to return from a surface. The scanner never physically contacts the equipment being measured. Conveyors, pumps, crushers, fans, and processing vessels can all be running at full capacity during a scan.

    Innosa Projects uses LIDAR 3D Scanning equipment capable of capturing millions of data points per second at ±2mm accuracy. The scanner is positioned at multiple vantage points around the area being surveyed. Each setup can take as little as 3–8 minutes. Personnel can continue working in the area throughout.

    What about vibrating or moving equipment?

    Moving or vibrating equipment is handled in post-processing. Innosa’s point cloud workflow identifies and removes dynamic interference including personnel walking through the scan area, leaving only the stable structural and equipment geometry. The final point cloud is dimensionally accurate regardless of plant activity levels during capture.

    When does a Shutdown actually help?

    While scanning does not require a shutdown, there are cases where scanning during a planned shutdown window is advantageous:

    • Access to areas that are physically inaccessible during operation (enclosed vessels, guarded machinery zones).
    • Scanning equipment interiors where access panels must be open.
    • Situations where scan completeness requires reaching every face of a component.

    Even in these cases, the preference is to scan the accessible areas during operation first, then use a short access window during shutdown to capture the remaining geometry. This approach minimises the time needed inside the shutdown window.

    The better question is when should you scan?

    For platinum mine engineering teams in Rustenburg, the most strategic time to commission a 3D scan is before the annual shutdown window, not during it. Accurate as-built data in hand two to four weeks before the maintenance window opens allows pre-fabrication, clash detection, and installation design to be completed before a single contractor arrives on site.
